What Amagansett does to a window
Amagansett glass takes the Atlantic head-on. Further Lane, Bluff Road, Beach Hampton, the Amagansett Dunes and the homes along Atlantic Avenue and Indian Wells face the ocean across a single row of dunes, and a south wind dries a white salt film on the ocean side of the house within a week of a cleaning. A nor'easter carries the spray across Montauk Highway to the Lanes and leaves a hard line that rain does not rinse off. On the Napeague stretch the houses are built on sand with water on both sides and the glass never fully dries.
Away from the beach the problems change. Devon, Barnes Landing and the homes on Gardiners Bay take a damp haze every morning that leaves a gray film on the water side of the house. The village and the Lanes sit under oaks and pitch pines that drop pollen for six weeks each spring, Montauk Highway and Old Stone Highway get salted and brined all winter, and plow spray leaves a de-icing haze on the front glass of homes near them. The older shingled houses carry wood sashes and storm windows that trap grime between the layers, and summer houses open in May to glass untouched since fall.
Oceanfront homes on Further Lane, Bluff Road, Beach Hampton and the Dunes do best every two months, and many go monthly in the windy months. Bayfront homes in Devon and Barnes Landing do the same. Can you remove hard water spots from sprinklers?
